Faro
The Capital District of the Algarve is Faro. It is one of the most important populations of the region, where the international airport is located. Full of history, this town is testimony of its past artistic town center. Reflected in the Arabic and medieval walls, Moorish-style facades or in the Manueline, the Archaeological Museum where the remains of Roman ruins can be seen. Through the Arco da Vila you can access the old town or Cidade Velha. Once inside you will find the Bairro Ribeirinbo - a riverside walkway as well as many old moorish buildings and other picturesque places of interest. The city consolidated in s. XVII and XVIII offers visitors many contrasts, from the 40 cafes, malls, golf courses, and its marinas filled with sailboats, fishing boats and yachts, to its historical sights, chapels and the Cathedral, whose construction began in 1251. Holy houses dot the city and its surroundings, one such place that has an impact on anyone is the curious Igreja do Carmo. A must see for people visiting the area.
Getting to know the Algarve (to all those flying, your journey starts in Faro)
The best way to really get to know the Algarve, its people, and its way of life is by exlporing the small villages, from the different municipalities to each and every Parish. Every single one of them is different and unique. Testimony of many great cultural and social events since the ancient times, are some of the ruins, still surviving in these areas.
The Algarve area has a total of a 155 km long coastline and so it’s quite easy and fast to go from one extreme to the other. With well maintained National Roads (EN125 - Infante de Sagres) - In less then two hours you can travel the length of the Algarve.
