Silves

No one can speak of the Algarve without mentioning Silves.

Silves has been, and still is one of the most impressive cities and municipality in the Algarve, located between Loulé, Albufeira, Lagos and Portimao.

Situated on a hill in the Sierra de Monchique, Silves owes its creation and development to Rio Arade, an important means of transport and communication that prompted the settlement of people from the Iron Age, 3,000 years before Christ.

Having already been the capital of this beautiful region of the Algarve. The majestic city of Silves known for the imposing castle, which hides many greats secrets, stories and experiences of an important time in the Algarve’s past.

With an area of 12,000 m2, this castle has proven to be a pearl of old. Some of the archaeological excavations have shown that the older buildings date back to the 8th Century. This castle has also been used as a prison, in the 16th century after the Christian conquest from the Moors.

Curiosity: Silves is built on the largest aquifer in southern Portugal. Aquifer Querença - Silves - Due to this factor, the region is rich in the orange grove tree brought to the region by the Arabs / Moors, thousands of years ago.
The town is full of things to see, from the famous and beautiful beaches of Armacao de Pera, with all its historical and cultural heritage. The mountains are also a wonderful tour for those more adventurous who want to take a few walks, biking, trekking, and if you are lucky take a ride on a Burro - donkey.
