The Algarve being surrounded and bathed by the great Atlantic ocean, fishing is obviously one of the main activities and industries in the area, due to this fabulous coastline. Therefore it is not hard to imagine that fish is the “Star Dish” of this beautiful country. The "sardinhas Grelhadas" - Sardines grilled over charcoal or the famous Cataplana (fish stew with tomatoes, potatoes, etc.) are the traditional dishes on the coast amongst many others.

The Gastronomy of the Algarve, is considered very rich and varied, and many of its local natural ingredients are used in the food - for example - many sweets are made from Carob, figs and almonds, trees that are typical of the region.

You’ll also be able to taste the most exquisite dishes, such as the famous "Pasteis de Polvo” (Octopus Cakes) accompanied with the famous and delicious" Arroz de Tomate " (rice with tomato). Shellfish and seafood in general are also stars in this region, because not only do we have the Ria Formosa which is rich in black oysters, clams, etc but it also provides excellent Atlantic mollusks - Large Red Prawns, Razor Shell, Mussels, Scallops Shells, Clams, etc.

One thing to take into account when traveling or visiting Portugal is that most fish is grilled over charcoal, a pure and healthy way to cook giving it an exquisite flavour unique to the region.
